The Editorial Wedding:
Elevate your wedding photography business by implementing creative direction with fine-art sensibilities
Tuition: $600 (+$25 model/styling fee)
The field of wedding photography is exploding, and one of the most exciting aspects is the opportunity for artistic creativity. Most people getting into wedding photography start off with a fly-on-the-wall approach, documenting the day as it unfolds before them. But a wedding day is a larger-than-life moment, and your challenge is to showcase that feeling for your couples. Candid photos are certainly an important part of your work, but what helps set a successful wedding photographer apart is the infusion of a fine-art sensibility. By developing a unique style that focuses on artistic and editorial imagery, you can elevate your work and begin to define your own personal brand of photography.
Growing your business requires offering something that no one else can do exactly like you can. What is it about your voice as an artist that will make couples want to hire you over all the other wedding photographers out there? By making the move from “fly-on-the-wall” to “artistic director”, you become more valuable as a photographer. Your couples will trust you more, and be happier with their photos. Your work will become more publishable, and in turn, you will be able to attract couples with bigger budgets and expand your reach - all while feeling more and more creative behind the lens.
So how do you make these photos happen? In the midst of the hustle and bustle of a wedding day, how can you create the kind of photographs that will set you apart as an artist? How can you walk the line between documentary photography and high-end editorial work? How do you attract the kinds of couples you want to work with? And how do you connect with like-minded florists and stylists to help you in your creative process?
In this workshop, we will examine what goes into making elevated and stylistically-driven wedding images, as well as what kinds of photos are likely to get published in magazines and blogs. We will discuss “posing” vs “directing”, learning to take charge, and keeping a sharp eye for detail. From bridal portraits to family photos, ring shots to reception details, there are opportunities for creative direction everywhere. You will come away with an understanding of how to grow your business and consistently exceed the expectations of your clients.
The workshop will be divided into two days. The first day will be lecture and demonstration based. The second day will be a guided styled photoshoot complete with models and boutique details provided. Attendees will come away with gorgeous images to use in their own portfolios, websites and social feeds.
