Intro to Fashion Design 
A 4-week fashion design series for teens & adults that meets Wednesday evenings. Students will learn the basics of garment design and fashion illustration. Your will leave with a portfolio of sketches and fabric selections for a clothing line, and the confidence to continue to developing your collection.

COURSE DESCRIPTION 

 

​

Join us for a 4-week series where students will learn the basics of garment design and fashion illustration. In addition, you will learn the process of designing a fashion line from ideation to completion. 

 

This is a beginner level course for teens and adults interested in fashion and illustration. Students will learn to sketch and design a line of original designs. Each week, students will be given an assignment to practice what they have learned in class and develop their own visual voice!

This is an excellent course for people interested in applying for a fashion design course at an institution or university. Students will leave with a portfolio they can use in their application process. 

​

We will cover:

• Sketching the fashion figure

• Drawing faces

• Rendering garments

• Applying design principles

• Using apparel terminology

• Practicing design communication and presentation skills​

WEEK ONE

• Intro to the design process

• Sketching the fashion figure + choosing an original croquis

• Gathering inspiration and developing your personal design aesthetic

​

HOMEWORK:

• Choose or create a croquis to use as a template

• Bring in 3+ inspiration images / objects

• Choose a season for your line

​

WEEK 2

• Drawing Faces & Hair

• Developing a color palette + mood board

​

HOMEWORK:

• Create a color palette with 3-5 colors

• Assemble a mood board

• Draw 3 faces with different hairstyles

​

WEEK 3

• Drawing garments

• Apparel Terminology

• Developing Design concepts

​

HOMEWORK:

• Using your croquis create 3 -5 original looks

• Finalize color palette & mood board

​

WEEK 4 

• Present your beautiful designs and receive feedback from your peers and instructor!

• Receive certificate of completion

WHAT'S INCLUDED

All artist tools and materials will be provided for in-class work. A home materials list is provided below for homework assignments.

HOURS & LOCATION

The class will run every Wednesday evening for two hours, starting promptly at 5pm and ending at 7pm. This workshop is an in-person course hosted in the Art Barn at Howe Hill Farm in Camden, Maine. 

​

​

WHAT TO BRING

All materials will be provided for work in the classroom, but it would be helpful to have the following items at home for assignments work:​

​

• Pencil (0.5 mechanical pencil recommended)

• Eraser

• Pencil sharpener

• Colored Pencils

• Markers in a variety of colors

• Ruler

• Printer Paper

• Tracing Paper (recommended but not required)

• Scissors

• Tape

• Gluestick

• Access to a printer

Skill level

This workshop is designed for adults and teenagers who are interested in garment design and fashion illustration. This is a beginners course, no prior art experience is required. 

​

REFUNDs

If you need to cancel, please notify us via email at least 15 days before the start of the workshop. We will refund your tuition, minus a $50 cancellation fee or you may transfer your full tuition amount to another Workshop at Howe Hill Farm within 18 months. Cancellations made within 15 days of the workshop will result in forfeit of the full tuition amount. If you are traveling to attend a workshop we recommend insuring your trip with Travelex insurance so your trip and tuition will be covered in the event of illness or unforeseen circumstances.

*If minimum enrollment is not met within 10 days of the workshop start the course will be cancelled and a full refund will be issued to all registered students.

​ MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR 
LEA FRENI

Lea Freni is a Maine-based designer and artist. She is the co-founder of Create Collective Workshops, a multi-disciplinary art collective hosting creative workshops throughout the Northeast. She has extensive fashion industry experience in apparel design and 3D modeling. She has worked for Calvin Klein and other prestigious fashion houses. Lea completed degrees in Fiber Science and Apparel Design from Cornell University. She is passionate about art education and exploring surface design techniques with creatives of all ages and skill levels.
